Slightly offshore on the Noosa river sits the boat house. It floats on a giant pontoon which are attached to land via a jetty. One day, when a cyclone comes I’m sure we’ll see the Boat House break its moorings and float out to sea.

At the moment however, it is a two storied restaurant/bar with takeaway fish and chips available on the lower level. A deep channel has been gouged around the floating structure making it a haven for the fish that live and spawn there.

I’m fairly certain these fish are not those that are served in their fish and chips but probably are fed with bits and pieces from the restaurant. They are huge but the public are not permitted to fish in this area.

Instead it has become a deep channel used for launching canoes which can be hired from the shop on the jetty. The common variety seen at the foreground and two odd ball white skinny as skinny ones on the grass.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
What a paradise. I feel like throwing a line out.

I think they’d jump on as being a marine sanctuary they’d have no experience of bait

I’d be there just for the fish and chips. Love the big fish!

Anywhere with fish and chips gets my vote…and let’s hope for no cyclone. What a wonderfully unique place this Irene!

It is a great place Sherri. The fish and chips don’t come with vinegar though. That is something we have to ask for.

How fun! After canoeing, to glide back for fish & chips (watching fish) would be a great way to spend an afternoon.

I agree. And in a canoe your toes wouldn’t be nibbled.
