Oh! My kids love this! My little one (not-so-little) used to sing this. 🙂 He says it’s so cool that you have a famous bird right in your own back yard.

I’m so glad the song made it to the States. They seem to be able to survive in any surroundings and you’ll find them on balcony railings in the city and in trees or on the ground in rural areas. Wonderful fun to hear them laugh.

I was just going to ask what kind of birds were in the pictures when I read your song. Kookaburras – do they have a unique song?

They have a song that sounds like a human laugh when a belly laugh gets rolling. When you have five or more laughing at the same time it is hard not to join in. I have put a utube link so you can hear them although I don’t believe they should be being fed bread.

Thanks for the video! They are very interesting birds. We have some crows here that sound a bit like them when they get going!

What a fun name for a bird!

Almost an onomatopoeic name and a joy to hear them laughing en masse.

Always find the kookaburras in my peninsula world are a joy to have around. Great alarm clocks in the morning. Good way to wake with a smile when they begin laughing together. They can be quite loud.

Yes I love kookaburras too. We tend to have the lorikeets waking us up of a morning but the sound of birds singing or laughing is a joyous alarm clock.

The most wonderful thing about a garden is the way the shadows shift throughout the day and the seasons!!

That is for sure. In summer here you chase the shadows for a bit of relief from the heat.

On my visit to Australia many years ago, I didn’t get a chance to see a kookaburra which was a huge disappointment. I didn’t realize they were such big birds! Love the little clip 🙂

Glad you liked the clip. Going back a number of years they were a bird of the bush but now they seem to have acclimatised to all manner of environments. Pity you didn’t see them while you were here. Next time maybe….. 🙂
