I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Love these! Wonderful shadow shots. Love the birds and the background, too.

There is something about a pelican and whereever they are is going to be nice.

The pelicans cast some shapely shadows on the sands.

Such great shadows from the pelicans that you don’t even notice the smaller shadows of the sea gulls.

I love pelicans but had no idea you could get so close to them! Are these tame? Can you feed them?

They will certainly take food from you. They feel quite safe and hang out with people on the river’s edge happily.

Brilliant ‘catch’! So funny too, with the sea gull shadows in tow…

Yes they kind of get lost in the pelicans up front and centre. But a great catch as the birds wait to catch….

Great! Love those pelicans and they, along with the seagulls, cast some great shadows.

So glad you noticed the poor little sea gulls shadows as well. The pelicans are so wonderful a bird everything dwarfs beside them.

I think the Aborigines look on the pelican as a spiritual presence. They are so special and your photos capture that sparkling water too, beautiful!

I didn’t know that Barbara but I can certainly understand why they would. They do have such a presence. I just love them. Thanks.

Great to see those birds on a beach, I see them here only in the zoo.

It is great having them living free. Wonderful to see them fly and land on the tops of piers. So cumbersome and yet so graceful.Love them.

Their shadows make them look like ducks.. lol… great shots!

I had to take another look but yes I can see ducklike features in the shadows. LOL Thank you

I am surprised to see a few pelicans staying in a bitterly cold winter. I love to watch them fly and swim all summer.

These are Australian Pelicans in not quite the tropics in Qld Australia so we’re lucky we have them all year. I’ve heard you are already bitterly cold. Keep warm….
