Today is my first birthday, although I celebrated it in a post the other day so I don’t plan on revisiting my reflections on the matter. Today I went to Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. It is not a place I know well but each time I visit I become more impressed with how well the river is used as a place for the public to enjoy.

A girlfriend and I had planned on catching the train but on discovering I wouldn’t get home until around 9pm if we did that I decided to drive. What an easy relaxing drive it was and having discovered a deal online for parking that was also a doddle. We arrived an hour early and hit the shops, not buying anything but certainly admiring the price tags.
At the appointed time we met our other friends from our nursing training days and had a delightful lunch overlooking the river at Eagle Street Pier.

We had plenty to talk about. Catching up with the present, remembering the past and speculating about the future and promising to do it again soon. The compulsory group photo taken by the waiter and then we headed off. Some back to Northern NSW, others to the gold coast and two of us to the Sunshine Coast.

Although I enjoyed my day it is always nice to get home. A great first anniversary day.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
Hooray! happy bday!! great shots, your furry friend certainly needs more rest though 😀 lol

The warm fuzzy is just a bundle of joy. Never having had a dog that makes himself at home on a lounge before (our GSD just didn’t do it) I am constantly overcome with tender feelings when I see him hugging a pillow and placing his head on a pillow. You would think he thinks he is human.

Congratulations! Did you think you’d still be here one year down the track?

I’d promised myself that I would give it a year and I am goal oriented so I knew I would do that but I did wonder if I would go past a year early in the piece and if I hadn’t made that promise would probably have given up in the very early days. Now there is no decision to be made. I enjoy it so I will continue to do it but I will cut back posts a little so I can visit a bit more. There are so many wonderful posts out there to read but you need time……

And a great post to celebrate it ! You all look as if you get on in exactly the same fashion as you did all those years ago: I would guess there’s nothing quite like nursing for forging friendships …

You are right M-R. Having to live in the nurses home and going through the same experiences gave us a bond that is hard to break. I don’t know how university trained nurses get on living in flats with others that aren’t involved in nursing and dealing with some of the things that they are bound to see. Also getting in past home sister of a night gives us many memories of a collaborative nature. Lots of fun. XD
