About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
Good catch! sneaky one huh?

Oooo, what kind of snake? My son had lots of snakes when he was growing up. I took care of them a lot. My favorite was a boa we named Anna. She was a sweet, friendly girl, loved to snuggle and be petted, also tended to escape when possible – we found her in many odd places. When we lost power and were all sleeping in one bed to keep warm, we put her in a pillow case and took her to bed with us. Snakes are amazing amazing animals – how they move, eat – and so good for the environment.

This was a nice friendly python. She scared the kids that were swimming by emerging out of a tree which had fallen some months back into the river. When we saw her first she had gone to safety up the tree. On our way back she was making her way to a bushy area between the houses that border the park and the river. Not a good place for her to be as she is in an off lead dog park and there is sure to be a Jack Russell or the like who will sniff her out. We told everybody we passed to put their dogs on a lead whilst she was out but we won’t be able to protect her indefinitely I fear.

OMG! Sometimes I’m sooo thankful that I live in the land of too-long winters. I don’t think I could handle snakes in trees. I don’t even like worms on sidewalks.

Haha. I love the worms on side walks.

That would cure me of sitting under a tree! Great shot, though!

It was difficult to take because the sun was setting and it obliterated the view of the snake on the finder so I had to get as close as I was comfortable to and aim sightless taking oodles of shots hoping against hope that one would capture the snake before he landed on my head. 🙂
