“Your house sounds like a train at midday,
the wasps buzz, the saucepans sing,
the waterfall enumerates the deeds of the dew . . .”
― Pablo Neruda
This quote resonated with me as this is exactly how our house sounds except that the wasps are native bees (I think), and the saucepans clatter rather than sing and the waterfall behind the pool and the other many water falls we have around the house create water droplets falling. I get a real buzz from all this water.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
EXCELLENT, Irene! – but no, they are indeed wasps. Not that it makes any difference to your terrific post. 🙂

You think they are wasps? Was I mad then getting myself up close and personal to them? I have been nurturing them for almost a year now. The olive tree which they favour gets a thrip on it which needs spraying but I always avoid these critters patch. I’d become quite fond of them. 😀

I thought they were probably harmless and to take the photo I got very close. M.R. tells me they’re wasps and I’ve never heard of friendly wasps.

I think it’s safe to say there’s no such thing as a friendly one lol

Oh no. I’ve been protecting them and encouraging the growth of the nest. I was devastated when a bit of my olive thrip spray killed a couple and I’ve been letting the olive tree suffer ever since. Now I have a real colony I am going to have to think about removing them before someone is hurt.

mmm i wonder if the wasps would see you as kind of like a matriarch since you’ve cared for them so much 🙂

Perhaps – they haven’t bitten me and I really did get up close and personal to take that photo yesterday. I will probably leave them until they bite someoe. I may regret it but I struggle to kill and who knows – perhaps they are the nemesis of the olive thrip, they just need to get their army large enough. 😀

Thanks M.R. for finding this for me. There is no doubt now. I guess I have to do something but I will wait until tomorrow or the next day. I’ll feel like I’m killing my friends.😥
