I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Two personalities: Trog and other Animals
By this time our farm stay was up and running. Our guests would arrive and see Mungo, our German Shepherd Dog, barking their arrival and Trog, tiny despite being fully grown, purring away. The most usual reaction varied between wariness … Continue reading
Farmers need Animals: Trog and other Animals
Having all this land and to prove we were farmers, we had to get some animals. The first of these to arrive were the chickens. These I purchased from an advertisement in the local paper “the Gloucester Advocate”. The produce … Continue reading
Wildlife: Trog and Other Animals
Mungo was a great asset when walking the paddocks, finding all wildlife possible. He had no desire to harm any of it but he certainly wanted me to see it. He would run off ahead and when a creature was … Continue reading
Horrible little suckers: Trog and other animals
Mungo and I set out on a mission of discovery. We would know every blade of grass on our place by the time we finished our daily walks. I revelled in the land although thick lantana covered much of the … Continue reading
Mungo meets Trog: Trog and other Animals
I believed you couldn’t have a farm without a dog and started my plan of persuasion. Rod had not owned a dog before and, as we planned on having guests, he put the kybosh on me getting a German Shepherd Dog, … Continue reading
Daily Prompt: Non Regional Diction: Trog and other Animals
“Rod you’ve never lived in the country in Australia before so I’m warning you, you’ll have to be prepared for all the visitors we’ll have in the next week or so.” “Why?” “They’ll come with plates of scones and all … Continue reading
A New Beginning: Trog and Other Animals
Back to our small family, the two dogs, the two cats and oodles of fish we tried to get back on track. Having left, although only for three days, Paul believed that I would go again. Other forces were also working … Continue reading
It almost ended: Trog and other Animals
Work had become important in my ability to keep some sanity. Walking the dogs was my only other enjoyment. When the opportunity to do my intensive care certificate presented I only momentarily hesitated; I wanted to do it despite the … Continue reading
I don’t believe how irresponsible I was: Trog and other animals
Jodie and Boris grew and the garden flourished as my marriage festered, withering the love that once was there. Paul blamed work. He was now a train driver and working shift work. It wasn’t long before he started just not … Continue reading
I finally gave in- twice: Trog and Other Animals
Whilst the fish numbers were increasing Paul started really hassling me about getting another dog. Our life was a little rocky to say the least and with only one of us working I really didn’t want to put extra pressure … Continue reading
