Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

That is a determined water dog. Sorry to have been absent for a while. After my vacation (which was a working one), I started taking care of our elderly dog who needs to go out twice a night. My cognition is not good – interrupted sleep has a bad effect on me.

Sorry to hear about your dog and the lack of sleep you had as a result Noelle. I don’t think I would handle lack of sleep too well these days either. Hope all is going well for you.

Sleep is still elusive – darn dog got me up at 2 AM last night. I am fine in the AM but really fade in the afternoon. I’ve been napping. I looked at this picture again and decided I’d being going in along with Bundy. I’m good at water temps to 65 (Fahrenheit).

You’d be right here Noelle. My nephews and their Dad swam all through July which is our wintery month without batting an eyelid. If you are napping hopefully you are getting just enough sleep.

The colour of the sea makes it look cold. Reminds me of the colour of the Atlantic and it always seems to be cold.

On stormy (yet summer season days) the Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior could look fierce and cold, but it was actually warmer on those day because it blew in the surface water that was sun-heated.

That makes sense although I hadn’t thought of that before. I am more used to currents determining the water temperature.
