The Swedish changing of the guards was a colourful ceremony. Unlike Buckingham Palace, where sedateness was the order of the day, I found these guards running to their posts across the cobblestones like a breath of fresh air. Unrestrained spectacle. The blue hats were picking up one of their own regiment who had completed his shift whilst the white hats were depositing one of theirs to replace him. It was not until later that I saw their six shadows merged into three star wars like figures.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
Lovely shadows!

I have to say I am probably paying more attention to shadows now than I was when this photo was taken but you are right.

That’s great how the shadows have merged together

So cool how the shadows merged…aaand…just saw that exact statement above from Kylie as I wrote this. Oh, well. It is. 🙂
That is interesting how different their custom is from London’s. I never gave it much thought but I guess I expected all ceremonial guard-changing (for lack of a better term) to be formal and serious.

I like the merging. My nephews would just love the shadow people for their outer space adventures.
I guess it is serious to them but we get so used to marching being one particular thing it seems so odd to see the high legged version or in this case the run.

Very different to Buckingham Palace indeed! Sweden is a country that fascinates me. What did you think of it there Irene?

I loved Sweden Sherri. I was very lucky in that I have Swedish friends in Australia and on his 50th birthday a lot of his friends from Sweden came for the party. I put a few up in my house and when I went to Sweden a year later they reciprocated. I lived in suburban houses, summer houses, a farm in the country, a city apartment and experienced things that a tourist wouldn’t be able to. And not paying for accommodation it meant that I could afford to stay longer than I otherwise would have. I would love to return to Scandinavia with Roger. He has agreed to go to Iceland with me so you never know. Perhaps one day. 🙂

Oh that sounds so wonderful Irene. You had the ideal scenario for getting a real taste of the place. We just finished watching a wonderful series of 8 parts her called Crime of Passion, all ‘whodunnit’ murders all taking place in Sweden in the 50’s. Subtitles but that just made me concentrate better – I’m known for falling asleep in front of the tv…and it’s made me want to go there even more. Hubby and I have often talked of going to Scandinavia and hope to one of these years too…let me know if you ever decide to go…we could meet up and watch the Northern Lights together. And just think of all the walks we could take. Now isn’t that a lovely thought 🙂 ❤
