Some foods have your mouth watering long before you see them – the aroma wafting to you on the breeze.

Coffee – my favourite smell in the early morning. The coffee roasting however, makes me think of waffles.

The pungent sulphur and other gases from geothermal activity always remind me of my trip to Iceland. The sulphur smell was everywhere but particularly bad when you took a shower. The volcano is in Vanuatu and below in New Zealand.

The black bat flower lets off a not too pleasant odour in order to attract flies for pollination purposes. Unlike the gardenia whose fragrance is so sweet that many find it too heady.

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

You had my nose twitching with remembered smells. Especially Iceland! I’ve never see a bat flower, though!

Yes Iceland was a pretty unforgettable place – sight and smell. Bat flowers are a tropical plant (a form of yam) so perhaps they wouldn’t grow where you are.

How lovely to connect with you again. I have thought of you and your family and dogs often over the years. I am will again waiting on my 89 birthday in July with major health problems. Stay Safe!

Hi Betty Louise – lovely to see you again also. Sorry to hear you have major health problems – they seem impossible to avoid as you get older. We had our share last year. Hope you are isolating and staying safe. I will wish you Happy Birthday in July – 89 a great age.

This area is one of the safest in the US. We are n stage 2 about reopening and it as been okay so far. I had a telephone health visited yesterday.
