My grandfather was a keen photographer and had his own darkroom for developing. He enthused both my brother and I and from an early age we both had cameras and still to this day both delight in taking lots of photographs. Here you can see my brother’s box brownie and my modern camera.

I rarely went anywhere without my camera. Looking at the clothes I was dressed in I really should never have gone anywhere.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

I realised our family only took photos when on holidays. I only discovered the joys of photography when digital arrived

Certainly when digital arrived it became affordable to literally snap what ever you wanted to without regard to setting it up first to get that perfect shot. Glad you are enjoying photography now.

Hahaha. And we probably thought we looked beautiful and ever so fashionable. I have a feeling (but could be wrong) that the headscarf was called a baboushka. Ring any bells with you?

Not only did I have a bunch of these little scarves that I wore as ordered, my mom made me sew them! Dumb looking and uncomfortable. Lucky for me, my picture was hardly ever taken, so no evidence exists of my fashion crime.

Great photos! Including your early photographer days (we all have to start somewhere!). My grandfather was also an avid photographer. No darkroom though. After polaroids, it was mostly slides. A wonderful legacy.

Thank you for that reminder of the polaroid camera. My mother had one and we loved watching the film developing as we watched. She then went to slides also. I recently went through her slides and copied those that were worth keeping.
