“C’mmon darlin’. You know you want it,” Rupert slurred. His drunken. lecherous eyes undressed her.

Charleen felt the coldness invading her body, starting at her head and working its way down inch by inch until she stood, frigid beside him. “Don’t touch me!” She moved away, planted her legs akimbo, putting her hands defiantly on her hips and stared at him in defiance.

“Charleen me darlin’ , c’mmon. You know you love me.” He lurched towards her arms outstretched in an embrace she avoided.

“Leave me alone. I don’t love you and I’ll be long gone before the thaw sets in.”

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Brilliant story. Charleen is such a wonderful and strong character in a very frightening situation. Very well-written.

  2. It would be interesting to know what has led up to this scene? It sounds like a barrat pestering a server. Sure hope it’s not a married couple! I think she’s fairly safe right now. Sounds like Don Juan is going to be prone and snoring shortly.

  4. Dear Irene,

I can also imagine the alcohol stench. Vivid and disgusting….I mean that in a good way. Well done.

  5. Can’t say I blame her! Who would want to be manhandled by a drunk? Good story.

  6. Good for her. Nothing is worth being in an abusive relationship. She deserves to be up there with the MeToo ladies on the Time Cover.

  7. What a great take on the prompt! I also thought about the MeToo ladies. Good for them and good for her.

  8. Yeah, one-sided affection is no fun at all, especially if one side is drunk.

Rupert sounds a most unsavoury character. Good job he’s so drunk, or Charleen might have more difficulty escaping. On the other hand, she’s obviously someone who can take care of herself. I love the way you describe her ‘power stance’, with legs akimbo and hands on hips.

Glad she’s not giving him a chance at all… not a recipe for success is he!
