Weekend Coffee Share 26th November 2017

Welcome and come on in. Let’s get settled with a cup of tea or coffee and then we’ll chat. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the States. I hope your day was filled with happiness, family, friends and lots of delicious food.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that yesterday I did my Silver Star Modern Ballroom exam and for the first time that I remember I tasted fear. By the time I had watched other people in my class do their moves which I didn’t recognise as any that I knew, I had a complete brain wipe and the bile rose with my panic. I felt sorry for my dance partner as I was sure my breath smelt like the bottom of a cocky’s cage – it sure tasted like one. Luckily I was dancing with my teacher who is skilled in both leading  round the floor and quelling the nerves of those he danced with. He did a great job as I ended up to my surprise with an A for quickstep and an A- for waltz, tango and foxtrot. Considering the marks go to C- and A+  I was thrilled with mine. I received a trophy and my report card. Sadly these days in photos I always seem to look like a giant. Could be a New Years resolution coming up.

I thoroughly enjoyed my week with my friend although the weather didn’t do us any favours. We had a few hours of blue sky and that was it. She left on Thursday morning and it cleared in the afternoon. Still we got to do a few things such as go to Noosa Spit and lots and lots of chatting. I just love it with friends that you haven’t seen for a long time yet you can pick up as though it was yesterday that you last spoke.

In my spare time I have been working on a project for the university which I am really enjoying. It involves a bit of research and writing but I’ll talk about that at another time. I have finished the book I was reading and will review it during the week. I have started reading “The Dry” by Jane Harper. I’m not far enough into it to form an opinion yet. No time to go to the movies or to do much else. Took Mum for lunch on Friday and we went to Doonan Cafe where we can take the dogs so we all had a nice day.

Now it is your turn. How was your week? Has your weather been warmer/colder, wetter/drier. Have you read any good books or seen any good films?  Thank you for dropping in for coffee, it is lovely to see you. Thanks to our host eclecticali  who is our host of the weekend coffee share.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  3. Great dance scores. I sure would like to take a class again, we took one years ago but sadly never completed it. I danced with the instructor the one time and it was true amazing how he lead me around the dance floor while I had no idea what I was doing.

Those friends that you haven’t seen for a long time yet you can pick up as though it was yesterday that you last spoke are a wonderful kind of friend to have in one’s life.

    Great post, thanks for sharing.

  4. Hello. I am returned from a few days in God’s Country. The temperatures ranged from around 20 degrees Fahrenheit to close to 40 when we left. There was snow and ice was forming on the lake. No wifi in my place, but used my insomnia to good purpose by stoking the wood stove when I awakened in the night. Had a nice time seeing family and friends and favorite places. Now I am back to facing all the work I have postponed. After coffee. Thanks for the coffee.

    • Thanks Kathleen. Its my passion and I have to admit when Michael offered to video me in return for me videoing him I was a little nervous that I might look so bad that I would become self conscious. That’s not going to happen but I know what to work on so that is good. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here – our big time is Christmas. I think that if we to celebrate our first arrivals first harvest we’d be eating convict gruel. Not as nice as your goodies. Hope you had a wonderful time and Have a good week.

Rule one: never pay attention to what everyone else is doing. Who knows, maybe they were doing the same moves as you but totally screwing them up beyond recognition 😉 Congratulations on the good scores.

Congratulations on your fabulous dance results and also on working through the fear. I did my preliminary violin exam a few years ago and the fear got to me too. It was also really hot and my fingers were sweating and sliding down the strings. I practiced in a bus stand out the front of the exam room to warm my fingers up. Returning home, I wondered why I put myself through it and haven’t done any further exams. After I had a flare up of my health a few years ago, I decided that life was too short to spend a year perfecting AMEB pieces I don’ like. I much prefer the song choices in the Suzuki book. My violin teacher and I will be performing a duet of Bach’s “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring at the end of year concert next Sunday. I think we’re the only ones playing a classical piece. I must be getting old. Hope you have a great week!
    xx Rowena

    • Nothing is worth wrecking your health over. Play the tunes you want and just enjoy. My problem is I am a goal oriented, deadline driven person and try as I do to stop this I find myself continually putting myself through it.
Good luck with your concert Rowena and have a good week. xx
