Dahlia and Rhonda sipped their coffee as they chatted not glancing in Bee’s direction. Yawning, Dahlia swung her legs onto the table. “I’m tired.”
“Why? What have you been doing?”
“Nothing. You almost finished Bee?”
“No. I’ve got tables to set, flowers to arrange and the speaker wants the projector stuff. I’ll have to organise that. Would you set the tables for me? The sooner I get home the better. I’ve got the dogs to walk, dinner to make, the kids to pick up before I come back .”
“Sorry Bee. Too busy. Gotta go. See you tonight. Coming Rhonda?”

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Clever, her name is Bee! Why is it that there are Bees and then there are idle Queens? When Bee asks for help, others slink away.

There are always workers and some too lazy and others too above the task at hand.

They are so deft at making it appear normal to rise above the tasks needing done. I’ve known such people, but probably because I’ve been a worker Bee! Although, I’ve also known some people who absolutely can’t stop being worker bees and I’ve had to say “Go for it,” and step back because I am more interested in productivity than work. Maybe I’m becoming lazy! 😀

It is about the ant who is working tirelessly and the grasshopper who is just playing around with his fiddle. Winter comes and the grasshopper is freezing and starving. He is going to the ant who is warm and well fed and ask for her help.

That sounds like it is very similar to our story of the 7 vestal virgins who each get a candle. All but one use it until burnt out. Then they want a share of the candle that is left. Both stories pose a good moral dilema – should you share or not.

Or should you work for yourself instead of depending on others and be at their mercy.
