Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel

Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that’s turning running rings around the moon
© irene waters 2017
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space

Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind
Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own

Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone

Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space

Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind
Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?
Lovers walking along a shore and leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway and the fragment of a song
Half remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning to the color of her hair!
Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel

As the images unwind, like the circles that you find

Vincent Van Gough painting The Starry Night
In the windmills of your mind
Written by Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman, Michel Legrand • Copyright © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC
As soon as I read
Paula’s prompt for this week I was unable to get the song
Windmills of My Mind out of my head. Indeed it started to spin out of control as thoughts of spirals and winding roads and wheels chased themselves in circles inside my own head and how better to end than with Vincent Van Gough whose own head spirals drove him mad. Thanks Paula for making me think of the windy.
About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
I love all of your words, images and interpretations here. Very creative.

Thanks Miriam. They weren’t my words (wish they were) but ones that stuck. I wish I could have found a youtube of the song as the music was circular spirals as well and made the words stand out even more.

That’s a great pairing, Irene. I like Michel Legrand. I keep going back to that spoon composition/exhibit. What a quirky idea that was. Thank you for always being fresh in your ideas and entries. It’s pleasure visiting you again.

Thanks Paula. I loved your Yeats quote also. Sometimes others say it so much more succinctly than I ever could and I loved that your prompt prompted my memory as well as my creativity.

This stands alone as a wonderful observation of the world. Each image has its own story but put together, they are an essay about the entire world, from spider web to art installations to Ferris wheels to the indigenous Australian painting. Fabulous, an entire photo exhibition here.

Thanks Sharon. You are right – in themselves they are like a wheel within a wheel (art within art).
