#Weekend Coffee Share 25th February 2017

weekend-coffee-share-new-home-nerd-in-the-brain-1Welcome and come on it. Everyone else did today as the real estate agent had an open house of the place we are renting in order to get new tenants when we move out. Yes, it is really happening. The move has been scheduled for the 14th of March, still a few weeks away but it will go very quickly.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I have almost finished my final edit on my revisions and I’m happy with them. That doesn’t mean that the examiners will be but you can only do your best. I will be finished these by the end of February and resubmit. Then I can concentrate on the upcoming move and start packing boxes ……again.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you about the drama of my mother’s bed. She has recently fallen out of bed a couple of times and decided that she wanted rails to prevent this from happening. She is embarrassed that the ambulance has to be called to get her up off the floor and she is fearful that on a future fall she could hit her head or break a bone. A real problem for someone of her age. A new bed was obtained and we have been trying to sell the old one for a month or so. Roger and I ummed and arhed  deciding if we would take it, put a long single next to it and have a super size single. Then Mum had her first customer. We had to make a decision. We decided that we would take it. The bed salesman was excited. I was excited. We lay on the various beds and chose mattress firmness and colour. I was in a rush. I had to be out. “We’ll be back tomorrow to order” I said. The next morning we went to a linen shop en route to the bed shop, just to check we could get a sheet that would fit the almost 2 metre bed we would have. Our excitement waned— a king size and super king were the same width, all that differed was the amount allowed for mattress height. I can make it as two singles, I’ll get a suspender belt for it…I went through all the options. Eventually Roger persuaded me it was not worth the trouble and Mum luckily managed to sell it to the woman that had expressed interest.  If we were having coffee and Roger was not near I would probably admit it was a good thing.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am still reading The Museum of Modern Love but will hopefully be finished it tomorrow to do a book review for Monday. In my cruising series we will be visiting The Bay of Islands, our first port of call. Friday should see a new Times Past prompt – if you have any wheels memories there is still time to get them in.

Now I’d like to hear how your week has been. Our weather has turned and I feel autumn is around the corner despite still having hot days. We desperately need rain. What is happening with your weather?

Thank you for dropping in and thank you also to Nerd in the Brain for hosting our coffee weekend. Other places you can visit for coffee go here.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. I am confused. Too much happening. Mum falling out of bed. You are moving house and yet finding time to lay on different beds, shop/or sell two metres beds and sheets. Then there are ocean cruises and invitations for coffee, reviewing books. I am dizzy taking it all in and have to take a Panadol now.

Good luck with the completion of your manuscript, and then your move. I hope you are able to get a suitable bed for your Mum; one that she gets out of only when, and how, she wants.

  4. Don’t tell Roger but I’m laughing out loud about your comment regarding the bed.

I understand your mom’s concerns. My mom fell shortly after we moved her into the memory care residence where she still lives. She probably fell in the dark in the early morning after she’d woken up and stood up (probably to go to the bathroom,) but because her memory is porous, we’ll never know for certain. She broke her collar bone however, and that was scary and painful for her. In the US, or at least in California, it’s illegal to put up rails for an adult, an absolutely asinine rule that makes life so much more dangerous for people like my mom – old, frail, unsteady, unable to see well, and with memory loss. Makes me so angry that people make rules that make no sense and that they didn’t consider the full consequences when the rules were adopted. Tell your mom please that I said hello to her and am glad that her rails will make her feel and be safe.

As for all that packing – don’t know how you can do it again. But I wish you well.

    • Sharon I’ll pass on your hello. Interesting about the rails but I think the same may be happening here as the woman who bought the bed for her husband who is in care told Mum that the institution her husband resides in now (he comes home for the odd weekends hence the bed purchase) told her that rails are illegal. I knew there was a move to nursing on the floor so that falls couldn’t happen but if Mum had to do that she would never be able to get up. They do make her feel safe and she can manage them in the night by herself (that was my worry that she wouldn’t be able to get out when she needed to go). I’m sorry your Mum broke her collarbone and hope it has fixed (how is your arm?). I like your description of memory being porous.
As for moving again I have told Roger I am not moving until we are ready for a retirement village. This for me is it. I’m totally over it but it will be good to finally be where we were supposed to be from the start.

      • My mom’s broken collar bone happened about 6 years ago (She is going on 8 years at this residence!) and she healed well, She was able to follow the physical therapy instructions and that helped. Were the same thing to happen today, she would not be willing or able to follow instructions.

The breaks in my arm are healed but it will still be many months before I’ve regained my strength and stamina – might not fully return but I will be able to paint again and I can already write again. Thanks for asking.

And your feet – are they all healed? Hope so – are you dancing again? I still think about that awful incident with the dance instructor who was so unkind to the dancer who didn’t have a partner. Such meanness – where do people learn to be that way?

      • Glad everyone is mended or in the process of. My feet are great but I think I may be lucky. I can dance again better than before. The nastiness actually did us a big service as where we are now going is fantastic. The dance principal runs a very fair and inclusive class and everyone is so nice that I am much happier there as is the other person whose dancing has come on leaps and bounds with a good teacher and practice. The roof of the other dance teachers venue fell in – not that I believe in karma.

  5. Wow, there IS a lot going on. Best of luck with everything (the paper, the move…) and am very happy to hear that your mum is doing well and liking her new bed. Look forward to your travel posts. 🙂

  6. I’m with the readers who are a bit overwhelmed with all that is going on in your life! I’m so glad your mother will be given rails for her bed…a prudent move! She will also be able to use them to hoist herself up to a sitting position, which will be very helpful to all! So glad also that you have completed your manuscript. That is a real achievement!

    • Thanks Diane. Yes it was a good move for Mum. It is funny but when writing I didn’t think I had anything to tell as I’ve felt I’ve been doing little apart from editing and yet I’ve made everyone feel tired. I haven’t done much unpacking knowing that this move was coming up and this time we have hired removalists to move the furniture. It should be a doddle. The fish tank is the only thing I worry about regarding the move. Have a good week.

I like the “If Roger was not near…” Why do we hate telling them they’re right?
Poor Mum, falling out of bed must be more than scary. Glad she will now be protected

  9. Congratulations on finishing your revisions. It won’t be long before the big move. We will be goung on daylight time about them. It reached 50degrees Fahrenheit today. The mountains around the valley are still cover with snow. A drive around the area is interesting seeing the dead looking trees a d snow nearby. Think Positive! Hugs!
