I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

What a beautiful carving. It seems to bring the tree back to life, to be admired again and is that a child holding a Falcon? Gorgeous photo. Well done. :o)

Yes it does bring it back to life. I hope they can work out a way of making it last. She is certainly holding a bird of prey of some sort. I love the depiction of our wild life and first people in a setting that all would feel at home.

What a stunning piece of work. Where is it?

It is at the Newcastle Regional Botanical Gardens which is located between Raymond Terrace and the bridge at Hexham in NSW. The sculptures are probably the best part of the garden. With Hunter Valley Gardens so close and so magnificent the botanical gardens feels a little run down, apart from these pieces.

Thanks for that info, maybe I’ll get to see them some day.

What an extraordinary way to honor the earth and the first people. The ruff of tall grasses around sets them off as if they’re still part of another world, which is true in its way. I’ve never heard of this place before. Are there sculptures throughout the garden? All done by the same person? What an undertaking. What a feat. Thanks for the photo, Irene.

There are a couple of other ones but this is certainly the one that stands out. I don’t know who the artist was or if perhaps it was several but they were successful in depicting place and their place in it.
