Welcome. Come on in. I have every beverage but no food to offer. I have gone back on my paleo diet and if you were really hungry I could give you a fresh apple cucumber or colourful carrot, organically grown from the garden I am about to join. They are quite yummy.

If we were having coffee I would tell you about this garden. I haven’t been there yet (probably obvious otherwise there would be lots of photos) but will as soon as my toes will allow me to do things like get on my hands and knees I will. It is on the property of someone that lives alone and a friend we met dog walking is a friend of this chap. In order to give company to someone who is a bit isolated in the community they devised this plan of a community style garden where, by invitation, you are invited to have a plot. This means that between the 8 people that have joined the property owner will have visitors most days but as we are all at that age where we may take off for awhile he will look after the plots in your absence and water them on the days that you don’t go. With just 6 of them at the moment they are getting more produce than they can manage – hence the invitation for me to join. I’m really excited about it as I love growing my own veggies but since we moved here I haven’t had the space to do it.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that our house sale is now out of all the clauses where it could be withdrawn from and I am starting to pack in earnest. You probably saw the boxes covering the lounge when you came in. I am packing stuff that I will not want for 6 months to start with and then pack the stuff we are going to take with us when we move in January as we are going to be going into rental accomodation for up to 6 months. It looks as though we might be able to rent one house removed from where we are now so it will be a matter of carrying our boxes down the street.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I have nothing to tell you. This week has been busy but without anything of interest to pass on. It was just life and we were living it. I am still reading the same book LaRose by Louise Erdrich and enjoying it. Just haven’t had the time to read as much as I would like. Perhaps this afternoon I will put my feet up and read. Keep an eye out as there will be a new Times Past Challenge at the beginning of November.

Now tell me about your week. What you are reading, films you have seen, anything you’d like to share. Thanks Diana for hosting our weekend coffee.and other places to visit for a chat and coffee can be found here.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. What a wonderful community enterprise to help an older, isolated person feel part of the community, enriching all of you with fresh veggies from the garden. This is the best idea I’ve read about this month. Well done, gardeners and citizens, well done.

Happy to hear the move is imminent, the packing underway. With you moving next door for six months, the dogs may be a bit confused about why they can’t romp on their old quarters. But then they may help you become friends with the new folks moving in.

Be well, Irene. Enjoy the week.

  2. Thank you, I brought my Twinnings Irish Breakfast with me, it’s my favorite.
I or I should say we are just getting over a horrible Virus that spread through our whole family. My two year old grand daughter gifted us with it. Apparently she caught it in Day Care. I thought I was going to be lucky and not get it but I was the last one standing and then I was down.
I tried to help my daughter and her family. Went over there watched the little one, made a big pot of fresh chicken soup and let my daughter sleep. Her older daughter who is nine was walking around with a mask on and a can of Lysol in her hand and stayed in her room most of the time. We laughed at her because she sprayed every where she went. She was the only one that did not get sick. Smart girl.
I also am proud to announce the re-write of my book ‘The Italian Thing’, along with it’s new cover that is now on Kindle. I also found an excellent editor C.K. Brooke. She has done a great job and her prices are very reasonable. She is also an author and has several books available on Amazon. You can find her on Face Book and she has an Author page on Amazon Kindle.
I also hope your packing and your move goes smoothly and your future garden prospers.
I will now relinquish some time for the others here to let us know how there week was. :o)

    • My husband calls chicken broth Jewish penicillin and swears by its restorative powers, so it was probably exactly the right thing to do. You have evoked lovely images of your masked granddaughter with lysol in hand. Still I shouldn’t smile as she was the only one who didn’t get sick. Hope everyone is on the improve now and the week has seen wellness return to the family.
I’ll look out your book. Good to find a good editor.
Thanks so much for dropping in for a Twinnings. Lovely to have a chat. Hope you have a good week.

Well, this was the first week of my 30’s and so far it’s been so pleasant. Spent time with friends and family, hosted a nice little dinner party tonight actually, and trying to finish the book I’m reading (When Things Fall Apart. – Pema Chodron) so that I can begin the new one I got for my birthday. Just found your blog by searching for something their creative non fiction writers and look forward to reading more of your posts! Cheers!

  6. I’ve always loved the idea of a community garden, and have participated in two, several years ago. It brings people together in such a healthy enterprise! Great organic food, good company, and exercise—what could be better!

Your new garden situation could not be better. I am happy for you that it is all set up and you have been invited to share the bounty and participate. Good luck with the sale of the house and move. It is always transformative.

Sometimes (well, most of the time), I am exhausted at the end of the week and yet I cannot think of anything I did other than the mundane things that everyone does so I know what you mean about being very busy but not having much to say about that busy-ness! Get some rest. Have a super week!
