Weekend Coffee Share 7th August 2016

newcoffee

Welcome. Come on in for coffee or tea. Whatever you prefer. I also have some brioche today so whoever gets here first will have a taste delight. The weather is still good although we have had our first August winds. This is when we get the most leaf fall rather than in what to most would occur in autumn or Fall.

f we were having coffee I’d tell you that today I was notified by Word Press that it is my third birthday today. Yeah. Three great years getting to know some wonderful people. Time to celebrate.

No I didn’t get the candles wrong – each one is worth six months. Have a slice. Yum…..

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that we went twice to the movies this week. The first time we saw Hunting the Wilderpeople which I thought was a delightful film about a deliquent foster child who, as a last resort, ends up in the backwoods of New Zealand with a couple of Deliverance style characters. When the fostering woman dies circumstances see her husband and child reduced to life on the run. I would certainly recommend it. The other film which was also delightful and very funny in a witty way was Love and Friendship. My husband loved this film and laughed throughout preferring it to the Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I am not sure that I could chose a favourite between the two. This was taken from a Jane Austen novella Lady Susan which was not published until a long time after her death. If you like period pieces I’m sure you’d like this one.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am getting my act back together. We are working solidly preparing the house for sale and hopefully we will have it on the market in the next few weeks. I have decided that I cannot bear to leave all the work to my husband and when I see the surgeon regarding my feet on Thursday I will tell him I want to book in for January next year. We should have moved by that time and if not I should be able to get quite a few boxes packed beforehand.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that the new Times Past prompt is out. This one is regarding clubs that you may have joined and when in life you started joining in these things. Would love you to join in if you want to.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that it is over to you – I have done little this week except place ads on gumtree for items we no longer want (decluttering), washing floors and cupboards and also Muffin. I have discovered that I don’t need to leave Muffin to dry off as she stands happily while I blow her dry. This is a good discovery as it means that she can be in the house sooner. Outside she stands at the door crying and scratching and claw marks on the door are the last thing we want.

If we were having coffee I’d thank you for dropping in and tell you that it is your turn to tell me about your week. I’m looking forward to hearing what you’ve been up to, what books you’ve read and films you’ve seen. How is your weather? I certainly hope it is better than ours. Thanks to Diana for hosting our coffee mornings. To visit others for coffee

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. Irene, you’re so busy doing the kinds of things I dislike, and I admire your upbeat and positive attitude. I know you’re looking forward to having your foot surgery over with, but the process itself can’t be pleasant. Packing and moving – ugh! We’ve lived in our current house for over 30 years and I hope never to leave for another. I’m also trying to de-clutter, but I don’t face moving well.
As for dirty dog – she’s so adorable, and seems to have a great time getting dirty. What’s a little bath now and then?
Wishing you creativity as you get back into writing mode.

    • My mind boggles at 30 years. The longest Roger and I have lived anywhere is 4 years and in some ways that is lucky as the amount of clutter I would accumulate would swamp me if I stayed any longer. Watching Roger prepare for this though makes me think we won’t be moving too many more times. It is really taking it out of him and he is the type of man that will not accept any help (even if he pays for it).
Now I have worked out she enjoys being blow dried the whole clean up can be done in about half an hour so I’m happy that she has fun with her friends.
Surgery in a week and then I wonder if being forced to sit I will get the creative work done that I have set out for my time of inactivity. Will keep you posted.

      • I’m sending wishes for easy surgery and quick healing after. And lots of wonderful writing while your feet are up. Hope you’ve trained Bundy and Muffin to sit at your side so you can drop a hand to give them a pat on the head. Animals are so good for us.

      • Muffin has taken to the mobility scooter so well. I’m glad I spent all that time training her as I think that is the reason she just does it perfectly (and perhaps being run over twice had some impact). Yes it is lovely to reach down and have that head close by.

  2. I will have Tea thank you Irene. It is late here so I probably missed the treats but Tea is fine, thank you.
Sounds as if you had a busy week and will continue to be busy for the next few months. Is it wise to put off foot surgery for so long? Only you can know that, I wish you the best.

If I was having Tea with you I would tell you how hot it has been here in Florida this past week. In the nineties without the heat index, close to one hundred with it.
I would tell you that I have been trying to catch up reading blogs and email.

If I was having Tea with you I would tell you how my nine year old grand daughter comes every morning to stay with me this summer. She did not want to go to camp this year, she just wanted to come to our home each day. We go to the pool, we go shopping, or to the movie. We play cards or do some art work. She loves to mop my tile floors and water my plants. She told me she also gets to watch her TV programs without interruption from her two year old sister Madison. She goes to day care during the week. I think we spoiled Michaella from the day she was born, but not in a bad way. We love all of our grand children to pieces.

If I was having Tea with you I would tell you about the short stories I am writing, and how I would like to compile them into a book. I hope. :o)

If I was having Tea with you I would wish you luck with your packing and selling of your home. Only you know what is the best for you. I would also ask if I could help in any way. But, I live across the pond and it would be a long swim. :o)….

    Have a great Day……

    • You are right. It was too long to put it off and I am having it in less than a week. Consequently I have been busy trying to prepare. My nephews are currently holidaying in Carolina at the seaside so with the heat you are having they will find it a real contrast to their holiday here with us as here it is winter although hot enough for them to surf and swim. How wonderful that your grand daughter wanted to spend her time with you. That would be so special. How many grand children do you have. It sounds as though you have a number. Grandchildren would be a real joy. I use my young nephews and a few of my friends children’s children as my substitute grand kids. Thanks for your offer of help but yes it would be a long swim. It was lovely having tea with you and I hope to do so again soon. Once surgery has occurred I think I may be spending a bit more time on the computer and less running around but for now I have to keep going. Have a great week. See you soon.

  3. Nice to catch up and thanks for the cake. Three years… Nice. I wonder how long it’s been for me (on WordPress). Feels like yesterday, feels like forever. I’m so glad you’ve stuck with it and that I’ve gotten to know you, Irene. ❤

I’ll just have a quick one. I did not understand about your feet, Irene. I hope it is nothing complicated and painful. Take care!

Cheers to three years blogging! If I were having coffee with you, I’d help pack boxes. I’m practiced. Do you have Facebook groups for “yard sales” in your area? I used those and Craigslist for downsizing. A while ago, you had posted about making photo albums so when i packed and decluttered, I purged lots of photos and started a box for all the special ones that i would commit to albums. thanks for the idea! As I would ask for another cup, I’d say good decision to delay your surgeries, though I hope it doesn’t cause you pain to wait. It would be difficult to be laid up and moving. I hope it’s going well. I’d give you a hug and say thanks for the cup of joe!

    • Thanks Charli. Yes I am on a facebook sale page and we have a site here that is possibly similar to Craigs list called gumtree. I have bee quite successful through that with quite a number of items that will no longer fit in our new place finding new loving homes. My brother has researched photoalbums and he thinks that Mixbooks are about the best. I was using an Australian site but it has since gone belly up so I will try Mixbooks also. The delayed surgery is no longer delayed. This Thursday coming. I am hoping once done that I will have a bit more time on the internet but I will have to wait and see. It might just take me twice as long to do everything and then I will not have time for anything. Thanks for the hug. I am returning it bear style and look forward to catching up at the ranch in the near future.

  6. Coffee is my go-to choice! I’m glad you are postponing your surgery until the house issue is settled. It’s a good idea to clear your calendar, and be 100% ready for a three month (or more) period of recuperation.

  7. By now, you will have had the surgery, and it will be all over. All the best, Irene. Look after yourself!
