Wink murder: Friday Fictioneers

It was Andreana’s sixteenth birthday. She chose the games they played,  pin the tail on the donkey, musical chairs, blind man’s bluff and pass the parcel. She’d seen the smile Alec gave Veda. Miserable, she wanted to cry. Instead she demanded hide and seek. Alec was It. He’d made a great show of hiding his face by climbing half into the old piano. Everyone laughed then hid. Alec didn’t come searching. Eventually, bored they left their hiding places.

“Bloody Alec. Always playing the fool.” Veda screamed as she saw the scissors.

Andreana smiled. No-0ne knew she had been playing wink.

Wink murder is a parlour game where a secretly selected player winks at players, killing them. The remaining live players have to work out who is the winker.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  2. Is this story for Grisly Friday? Having second thoughts about inviting you to my Sweet Sixteen party.

BTW, did you know I mentioned you in my last post, I Remember It Well, on June 9? I would never bug anyone to read something on my blog, but you might recognize a previous conversation we had that became the incentive for this.

    • Now that would be time travel me going to your 16th.
Thanks for the mention. I do recall the conversation and I’m glad you continued it. A great post. Often memoir is seen as being a narcissistic pursuit whereas I see it as not only identity forming but also important from a sociological viewpoint. These records of what time was like will be eye openers to your children and grandchildren and also to any who read it. Unfortunately as children we pay little attention to all those valuable stories our parents tell us and then they are lost when you realise how much you want to know them.

Aaah, this is scary. She really can’t see the boy she has a crush on like anyone else. Great take.

That song came to mind even as I started reading the story, long before I scrolled down to it. I’ve never heard of that game. Good story.

Yes, I have played wink a few times. We played it with cards, though. I think we called it “killer.” This girl took it to the hilt.
Can’t go wrong with Lesley Gore. Nice work, Irene. 🙂
