All Quiet on the River: Silent Sunday

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

    Makes me miss the Lake.. and being on the water. Are these pictures you take? Around where you live?

      Yes I take all the pictures you see on my blog unless I have credited them to someone else such as the Friday Fictioneer pics and the very odd other photo. Yes this river is the Noosa River and is maybe 10 minutes walk from where I live. We are bounded by a river on either side of us and we are just a minute from Weyba Creek, a river which joins the Noosa river just down the way a bit. They enter the sea a 5 minute drive from us. I can understand you missing water – we found when we didn’t have water nearby that we were miserable so we built a huge dam to satisfy our need.

        When i was younger my stepfather would always take me/us fishing out on the lake. We would wake before sunrise and usually get out to our first spot just as the sun was coming up. We would dive off the boat into the lake on the super hot days. I drove the boat sometimes. And we always always got our limit. My old man is a master fish finder. Hes diabetic and a year ago had a severe stroke. Though we hav not went fishing for more than 10 years, it still tore me up and really closed the door on going out… to give you an idea of the man, he always had a book in his hands, scifi and fantasy stuff, wealth of useless knowledge and thee best storyteller i have ever known. One of my favorite things he would do was when out on the lake, passing boats in the near distance he would smile over politely across to them, wave, and say to me “wave if you eat shit.” They always smiled very politely and waved back. Hes a great man living on 20% of a kidney as i type… i am very fortunate to have been partially raised by this impressive man… your surroundings Irene are very beautiful. Im sure it is a wonderful place to live. Thanks for sharing.

        Your stepfather sounds like an amazing man. Sad that he has had a stroke and can no longer go fishing. His storytelling is probably in part why you enjoy storytelling so much. Such a person is such a good role model. I think that he would have loved the fishing here. Thank you for sharing.

        Indeed. He has been a huge influence on something i may have never had an interest; literature. I know i would certainly love to fish, visit, or live there.

        Im saying it would be had i not been blessed with my stepfathers wisdom, insights, discipline, and adventures on the lake. Your pictures truly made me reconnect to some memories. Made me want to get out there 😊
