Weekend Coffee Share:23rd April 2016

newcoffee

Come on in before I fall asleep in my coffee. I am trying to stay awake for another couple of hours so tell me your news, make me laugh and have a cuppa and some seeds. Sorry that is all there is as I ate the cranberries for lunch.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I thought this week could only get better but I was wrong. At least though, we have discovered what the problem is and tomorrow morning Roger plans on rectifying it. His beard is being shaved off. A pity as it suits him but it is obvious to us now that whenever he grows a beard our life goes haywire and starts to revolve around hospitals. Last time he tried to grow a beard was before his 70th birthday. On that occasion a chain of events (you can read about it here) led to my hospitalisation and both Roger and I being blinded.

This time I’ve had my Mum who is finally back in bed to sleep but not before gaining a head injury as the narcotic pain relief she was having put her to sleep leading to her falling face first onto the floor, giving herself a head injury. As well as my Mum last night Roger gave us a sleepless night as he moaned (more like screamed) in pain as he hugged the toilet. After 4 hours he finally consented to me taking him to hospital. Morphine did the trick for him and he was sent home with a diagnosis of gastro. 8am x-ray rang and said he was to come and have a CT at 10 am. Not bad for a Saturday morning. 1145 we got the first call that our medical centre had got the results and the doctor wanted to see him straight away. An appointment was made for 1pm. In that hour we went through all the possible diagnoses. All dire.  Just as we were walking out the door. The hospital rang. That doctor wanted to speak to Roger. Now our hearts really sank but luckily although not good it was not a dire prognosis. He has kidney stone blocking a tube. The pain is likely to return but he will live to shave off that beard.

I’m sure I have good news as well. What it is cannot be retrieved from my fogged brain so I’ll leave it there. You are welcome to get your own coffee or tea. I’m afraid I’m off to sleep.

Hope you have a good week and thanks to Diana for hosting our weekend coffee share.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Too much illness, too much time in doctors’ offices and hospitals and too many injuries! At least it is just kidney stones. I know they can be very painful, but, yeah, I can think of all types much more dire causes of the pain. So, the beard must go! I hope things begin to look up once the beard is gone.

  4. Falls are hard for seniors. I worry about them as they usually there is another injury from the falls. Sorry about the health problems unless the kidney there is relif. Easy to blame the beard, now it is gone let the your health be better.

  7. I just clicked the “like” button and realized that’s not what I meant at all.
You guys all need a break. No, not a break, you need a calm.
So sorry for all the illnesses and injuries, but with the beard gone, all should be well soon.
Might want to hang a dream catcher over your beds, sling a garlic bulb around your necks, throw salt over your shoulders, post a hex over the doorway, carry a rabbit’s foot, and plant a gnome in your yard.
    What, me superstitious? Kineahorah!

  8. Our coffee times are usually happier, Irene. So sorry to hear about all that has been happening. Kidney stones are a temporary problem, painful while they are passing through. I don’t know if anything can be done about making sure they don’t form again. I think there is no agreement about that. Let’s hope for a better week, with no hospitals!

I must have read this on my iPad at the time of posting, Irene, so didn’t comment then. What a series of unfortunate events, to put it mildly. I hope things are improving. I’m pleased that your Mum is back to lying down, but sorry she injured herself. I hear kidney stones are no fun. I hope your recent days have brought less drama.
