Aussie Bush Basher: Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge

The Aussie Bush Basher is an Australian icon but always an odd ball.

The Bush Basher is an Australian slang term referring to a motor vehicle which can drive through through the bush, across rivers, up sand dunes and anywhere else off road that a path can be forged. Usually these vehicles are four wheel drive making the drivers life a little easier. Other times an old sedan will surfice. These are utility vehicles with no need for good paintwork although the window screen will be protected with mesh from the kangaroos and cattle that might find their way towards it.

A set of roof racks on the top will allow storage for the necessary equipment for a trip in the Aussie outback. A saddle, swag (bush bed), ammunition, esky for the tinnies (beer) on top along with the first steer skull that can be found. A rabbit tail for good luck is an essential to hang off the aerial at the back.

What is even more odd about this bush basher is the type of road kill this driver has managed to come across whilst out bush. What is perhaps even more odd was this was in an arcade in the Melbourne suburb I am visiting. I saw the crowds of people massing around and thinking someone was handing out free food I wandered down to look. Perhaps Mad Max had come to town.

For Cee’s Odd Ball challenge.

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

  1. That. Is. Gross. (But the beginning of the post is kind of interesting.)

  2. Gruesome. The stuff of nightmares I fear. Mine at least. I’m going back to the cottage on Vanuatu. Which might be on the other side of the moon by now. Far away from this bush basher.

  3. I was just going to say that it reminds me of something from a Mad Max movie. Guess I wasn’t alone in that feeling!

I’ll bet everyone’s familiar with a bush basher from the Mad Max movies! Didn’t like the fresh kill 😉 in this one!

An Aussie Bush Basher! Is that what gave rise to Mad Max?

Was ok till I got to the head! Suitably gruesome for a Halloween nightmare and definitely a great set of odd balls for the challenge!
