Dead cars littered the yard. Long grass grew around abandoned plastic containers and batteries. A child’s blue plastic wading pool reflected my deflating spirits.
“This can’t be the right place.” Jerry sounded hopeful.
“It’s 61.”
A woman appeared. We followed her, silent, into the garage. Huge chests freezers lined the walls, while two pups played in a cage on the floor.
“Only two left. I’ll give you some time. I’ll be back.” She left.
I cuddled a pup. Inquisitive, Jerry opened a freezer lid, momentarily freezing before banging it shut.
“What the hell are they feeding these pups?”

November 3, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a frozen story. Is the weather the source of freezing or is a character frozen by emotion or lack of it? It can also be a moment frozen in time. What does it reveal?

About Irene Waters 19 Writer Memoirist
I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.
Oh my god, Fantastic! Horror story to go. Dying to know what’s in the freezer and please tell me they take both pups..

Okay. They take both pups. Don’t die to know whats in the freezer or you too could end up as puppy food.

The unknown beasties was large, covered in hair or fur and was frozen solid. What it was remains a mystery to me — but its fiction I can make anything up.

So happy you write fiction. 🙂 Make something else up. I want to know what the beasties are…

Yikes! I’m scared and don’t want to know…please tell me those pups are safe and sound by now… 😮 You know how to tell a great horror story Irene, you really do… 😛

Glad I made the cold seep into your bones Sherri. Pups safe and sound but the creatures in cold storage…. that’s another matter.

Oh, no! They use puppies to lure in victims! Run! Great use of the prompt, and the way the husband so casually lifts the freezer lid, human curiosity…But I really don’t want to know. 🙂

Yes you can’t stop human curiosity. I’ll bet his wife was telling him off the whole time for doing it too. 🙂

Great flash, Irene! I wondered how you’d go with frozen, though you probably have more experience with it than I have, being more traveled. I thought this was to be a tale about when you got Muffin, but I was soon put straight. I think I would have slammed the freezer door shut too! That last line explains everything else. Well done.
