When the huge clock in the old Queen Victoria building in Sydney is about to reach the hour the crowds gather, waiting for the passage of time. Once it is the o’clock the Westminster chimes peel forth followed by the chime to let you know what the hour is.

Midday is the best time to view the clock for the full twelve panels of English history light up over a five minute period. The Romans and Vikings are all present along with the major historical events which made Britain great.

I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Is this Henry VIII with his wives in photo # 2? It’s marvelous that such clock exists and I would like to see one in my country with our history. What a fabulous idea and response to time theme. I am much obliged Irene 🙂

Yes it is. Unfortunately the photos aren’t clear with the reflections of people standing watching the display plus the stained glass windows. 🙂

This is an interesting way to present history though it has a bit of a Disney feel. Reminds me of the museum panoramas we used to see when we were kids. I’d stand as long as my parents would let me before moving on, fascinated by scenes into other eras. Who is the woman in the white blouse? She seems to be caught in the clock.

The photos are full of the people watching the display (including the woman in white) my reflection (hair only) is visible in some in the right hand section of the frame. Also caught in the photos are the stained glass window that are along the outside of the building.

Well, after all, I’ve only lived in Sydney since 1975, and in Pyrmont (right next to the CBD) since 1993 … :-}

A fascinating way to portray history and so appropriate to feature it in a clock. Although I’ve seen clocks with moving figures, I’ve never seen anything quite like this. Fascinating. Thanks so much for sharing this Irene

You’re welcome Debbie. Time isn’t that easy to photograph, although yours was great, I had to resort to a clock showing time in moving pictures. It was a great challenge.
