I began my working career as a reluctant potato peeler whilst waiting to commence my training as a student nurse. On completion I worked mainly in intensive care/coronary care; finishing my hospital career as clinical nurse educator in intensive care. A life changing period as a resort owner/manager on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu was followed by recovery time as a farmer at Bucca Wauka. Having discovered I was no farmer and vowing never again to own an animal bigger than myself I took on the Barrington General Store. Here we also ran a five star restaurant. Working the shop of a day 7am - 6pm followed by the restaurant until late was surprisingly more stressful than Tanna. On the sale we decided to retire and renovate our house with the help of a builder friend. Now believing we knew everything about building we set to constructing our own house. Just finished a coal mine decided to set up in our backyard. Definitely time to retire we moved to Queensland. I had been writing a manuscript for some time. In the desire to complete this I enrolled in a post grad certificate in creative Industries which I completed 2013. I followed this by doing a Master of Arts by research graduating in 2017. Now I live to write and write to live.

Okay… I’m trying to figure something out here. Is that a wave in the background? Because I know it can’t be.

Caught as the tidal wave came in… No just joking. It is a volcano, black because of the ash it spews out and the area the chap is riding on is the ash plain. My husband got caught on it one day in torrential rain and the water off the volcano was massive and his jeep sank til all four axles were covered in sludge.

I’m cracking up! You tease–“tidal wave” and then deliver the actuality “volcano.” Somehow, I think I’d rather take my chances with the water! 🙂

Haha. 🙂

That is spectacular. (Except the part about your husband’s jeep, of course.) What volcano? Where is this?

I was just wondering the same question. What a neat picture.

I’m copying the answer I gave Sarah, but you are right I too think it is a neat picture. Caught as the tidal wave came in… No just joking. It is a volcano, black because of the ash it spews out and the area the chap is riding on is the ash plain. My husband got caught on it one day in torrential rain and the water off the volcano was massive and his jeep sank ’til all four axles were covered in sludge.

Exceptional photo – showing the other thing I like to do: ride horses!

That I didn’t know Noelle. Like sailing, horses seem to have passed me by although I love patting their noses.

I thought it was a big wave rolling in too, great shot.

Thanks Jo. I agree, it certainly looks like a wave.

It is an incredible photo, especially knowing what the background is! The contrast in color is great, and I like how the rider comes into the frame as if he’s passing through it.

I agree. It fitted the prompt for this challenge perfectly with the monotone background it makes the horseman light up.

I don’t know if this is the context you mean M-R

EXACTLY !!!! And, you know … without offence, of course ! I think this is even better !

No offence taken M-R. I rarely do any editing of my photos as I too like them as I remember the event but today I did crop just to give a totally monochrome back drop.

OK, that’s a reason.
It’s just that I think having the whole mountain thinggy there creates an even more minimalist feel. But what the **** would *I* know ?! 😀

Glad to read these comments beforehand Irene as I was thinking just the same as Sarah about the tidal wave! And loved what Charli said too…haha…not it’s not a tidal wave, only a volcano!! Love it 🙂

Yes she had me chuckling away too but unlike her I think I’d take my chances with the volcano. Although I love surfing I hate big dumpers. 🙂
